Art 1 - Super Closure (Elements of Art Collage)

Art 1: SUPER CLOSURE!
(9.6/9.9)


(“Super Closures” will be collected and graded as a quiz grade!)

Write a paragraph (6-8 sentences) on a separate piece of paper explaining how you showcased your Element of Art and used at least 3 Compositional Strategies in your collage. Include and underline the following vocabulary terms:

- Elements of Art
- Your specific Element (line, shape, form, value, texture, color or space)
- Composition (including specific strategies)

AP Studio: Breadth #8

Drawing Breadth #8. Due Tues. 9/16

Option 1: 

1 GIANT hand-  at least 5 to 6 times larger than life 

1.  The position of the hand must be “difficult”- fingers bent, slanted, foreshortened, etc.  No fists, open palms, etc.

2.  The hand may be holding something- but make it a significant object and it can't be so large that it hides too much of the hand.

3.  Don’t forget about the negative space- the space around and behind the hand.  Put something in the background- a tone, a pattern, something!

4.  As always, contrast and the rule of third are important.

Option 2: 

2 Big hands-  at least 2 times larger life 

1.  Hands must be touching or interacting in some way.  They may overlap, interlock, clasp, snuggle, etc. If the hands don't at least overlap, it will affect your grade.

2.  Use the positioning of the 2 hands to tell a story, show meaning or convey emotion.

3.  Consider contrasting expressions or character in the hands- tense vs. relaxed, active vs. passive, bony and angular vs. fleshy and round, rough vs. smooth, old vs. young, etc.

4.  Don’t forget about the negative space- the space around and behind the hands.  Put something in the background- a tone, a pattern, something!

5.  As always, contrast/rule of thirds is important.

Option 3: 

Option #3: Hands in action- size determined by # of hands

Instructions: 

 For this option you may include more of the arms and body to make the action clear. Objects may also be included.

Consider contrast and composition/background etc. 

2D – PHOTO Breadth #8: Light

You will chronicle light throughout your day by shooting 24 exposures:

✴ 8 exposures will explore MORNING and light before noon

-Consider how morning light affects your mood

-What does this time of day remind you of?

-What changes occur in light and shadow outside as the sun is rising?

✴ 8 exposures will explore the AFTERNOON and end of the day,

-What is your life like in the afternoon during springtime

-How does the afternoon sun affect the shadows?

-Look for areas of strong shadows or sharp contrast

-As the sun sets, what happens to the sky, to the light and shadow?

-Consider having the light behind you and then try behind your subject

-Remember, the weather for that day will also affect the light!

✴ 8 exposures will explore NIGHT

-Consider what artificial light is available: lamps, streetlights, headlights, etc.

-How does low light affect the mood? Create drama, suspense, or mystery!

-Try abstracting the photo by moving the light

-Remember to STEADY YOUR CAMERA with a tripod, on a table, or on the ground!

For all times of day you should use the following:

Principles of Composition: make thoughtful compositions as well as capturing light, NO SNAPSHOTS!

Bracketing: For important photos or tricky light shoot the same composition but adjust aperture or shutter

one stop in either direction.

2D: Other: Text Design

 - Create a work of art that utilizes text in a visual way. You will be taking one line/section from the books in class to illustrate.

- Use the actual text to create your image in some way. “Draw” with the words, along the form of your subject.

- Your image should relate to the concept of your line/section. You are illustrating an idea.

- Consider composition. Be interesting. Your arrangement should support your concept.

Art 1: Construction Paper Collage notes/assignment

Here's the notes/assignment that we did on 8/27 & 8/28 for those who missed class:

Notes: Compositional Strategies (ways to make a good composition):

1.Limit the types of shapes and lines.

2.Use a direction: vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved.

3.Repeat, but vary, the shapes and lines.

4.Use a color scheme

5. Repeat a texture or pattern.

6. Show a progression in size, shape or space.

7. Balance the weights of the shapes and lines.

8. Overlap shapes and lines.  

Collage Assignment (using Construction Paper):

•Use ALL of the compositional strategies to create 1 collage.

•Use at least 30 cut pieces of construction paper.

•Use only geometric shapes (squares, triangles, rectangles, circles, etc. No hearts, stars etc. )

•Draw your design/Arrange your pieces before you glue them down.

•Be neat. Cut straight and only use a little bit of glue.

Here's the assignments:

Drawing Breadth #7 – Due: Mon. 9/9
-Research and choose a fear/phobia.

-Create a figure drawing (of yourself or someone else) that uses extreme foreshortening. Use the phobia to dictate the person’s position/mood/gesture.

-Use the rule of thirds/complete the background.

-At least 12” x 18” – any media.

2D Breadth #7 – Due Mon. 9/9

-Choose from one of the following: Pink flamingos (plastic), Trolls, Barbies or GI Joes (or other creepy toy object, pick something that we recognize). Depict them several times from different angles in a piece of art showing dramatic foreshortening. Place them in an unusual or unexpected setting. Incorporate a fear/phobia. Look at some of Chris Van Allsburg’s work for inspiration

-At least 12” x 18” – any media.

-PHOTO: Same concept, roll of 24 images.

Here's the criteria for your "Elements of Art Collage"

Elements of Art Collage Criteria (Art 1)

•Complete the “Cut it Out” handout.

•Choose only 1 Element (line, shape, form, value, color, texture OR space) to be the focus of your collage.

•Sketch your design on the grey paper in pencil first.

•Use at least 3 of the compositional strategies.

•Cover the whole page (No empty (grey paper) space) with magazine pieces.

•Use good craftsmanship.

Art 1 & 2 : 1st and 2nd week vocabulary.

Here's the vocabulary that we have had in the first and part of the second week of school for Art 1 and Art 2 if you missed it/entered the class late.

Observational Drawing: •Drawing created when looking at objects, people or places. This type of drawing is meant to achieve a representational accuracy to the subject.

 Figure/ground relationship:  a visual relationship between foreground (objects etc.) and background (negative space, air, table, environment).

COMPOSITION: the way the principles of design are used to organize the elements of art; how a page is set up or arranged. 

Shading – a drawing technique that uses light and dark values (shades) to give the illusion of form (3-D).

Tortillion (blender) - a tool used by artists to smudge and blend drawing materials.

Art 1 also had: 

Collage: an artwork created by pasting cut or torn materials, such as paper, photographs, and fabric to a flat surface.
